Never give an inch: trade it.
For example: when bargaining, don't use language like "I'd be happy with £X per day" when instead you might say "if you give me £X then I'll give you Y."

On second thoughts: "What will you give me for Y?" is a better question as it leaves your upside uncapped. The person answering the question could very well answer "£X + £Z" where Z is non-negative!
